Flavors art and culture
Codroipo spreads to the south of the springs in a territory chosen as
a housing settlement because of the abundance of watercourses, the
quality of the clay soil and the strategic location as a center of major
road crossings, which is associated to the city toponomy. In fact, the
name Codroipo, derives from the Latin word “Quadruvium” indicating
the location where the Postumia road crossed with the road wanted by
Augusto as a connection to Norico. It has an ancient history, rediscovered
through the excavation campaigns and demonstrated by archeological
finds exhibited at the Civic Archeological Museum.
Codroipo, before becoming part of the Franco-Habsburg transfer of power in the XIX Century, was chosen as the place of residence by Venetian and Friuli nobility, which, here, built homes in which to reconcile “otium et negotium” in a setting among pleasant parks and large arcades. A practical approach to everday living that translates in the architectural choices of the grand Villa Manin of Passariano, a few kilometers east of the city center. The residential complex has a central body with large rooms with frescos and two lateral aisles where it is possible to admire the permanent collections of ancient weapons, carriages of the time and precious ecclesiastical furnishings, as well as valuables held in the sacristy premises, which lead to the Saint Andrea’s Chapel. Villa Manin is not the only one in the area: representing an echo of former glory in the residences that hosted the last Venice Doge, Ludovico Manin, there are also Villa Kechler in San Martino and Villa Colloredo Mels in Muscletto; Villa Kechler today hosts the Civic Museum of ancient carriages. The Villas and the Museums are just a few kilometers away from each other and the ideal way to reach them is certainly by bycicle. Codroipo offers more than 50 kilometers of cycling trails; it is possible to rent a bike at Villa Manin’s west parking lot where a bicycle-renting booth is located. Furthermore, there is a network of hospitality facilities and rest areas scattered all over Middle Friuli. On two wheels, it is easy to reach downtown where one can admire the treasures of the Santa Maria Maggiore Cathedral, which hosts a valuable crucifix of the second half of the XVI Century, known to all as the Black Christ. Otherwise, you can head south for a quiet stroll along the springs Park, a beautiful trail among watercourses and leaves and visit the mills area adjacent to the park. Then, between cultivated fi elds and poplar trees, one can reach the thirteen districts that make up “the crown” of Codroipo at the discovery of small and quiet rural villages, country churches and also to enjoy the cuisine of Friuli in traditional inns and or to sip a good wine at local wineries. Therefore, do not be surprised if you find yourself tasting the fragrant whites, or full-bodied reds, of Friuli Grave DOC while visiting a well-stocked Wine and Glass Museum located at the Pittaro winery, just a few steps away from where the world’s most famous acrobatic flight team takes off: the mythical Frecce Tricolori!
